Connor McDavid signs two-year extension with Edmonton Oilers worth $12.5 million a year

Connor McDavid was due to enter the final year of his contract with the Edmonton Oilers, but the three-time NHL MVP will be staying with the team for at least two more seasons.

After announcing he would be remaining with the team in a post Instagram, the Oilers confirmed they have signed McDavid to a two-year extension worth $12.5 million annually.

McDavid signed an eight-year extension with the Oilers in July 2017 and has since established as the biggest star in the NHL, with his three Hart Memorial Trophy wins featuring a unanimous MVP selection in 2020-21.

The first overall pick in 2015 has led the NHL in points six times in his career. He led the postseason in points in 2023-24 and 2024-25, yet the Oilers came up short in the Stanley Cup Finals in each of those campaigns.

The Oilers lost in seven games to the Florida Panthers in 2024 and were beaten in six games by the same opponent last season.

But McDavid’s attempt to end the Oilers wait for a first Stanley Cup since 1990 in the 2025-26 campaign will not be his last, with the 28-year-old signing a deal that will not expire until the end of the 2027-28 season.

The Oilers open their season with a home game against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
