Bodo/Glimt v Tottenham match preview

After a round trip of around 1,600 miles for a cup win at second-tier Odd on Thursday, manager Kjetil Knutsen gave Bodo/Glimt’s players a day off before they began to think about taking on Tottenham on Matchday 2 of the 2025/26 Champions League.

Revenge could be on the Eliteserien holders’ minds after their 3-1 away defeat and 2-0 home loss to Spurs in the Europa League semi-finals last season, including goals for Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke at the Aspmyra Stadion, which has a capacity of little more than 8,000.

“We feel well prepared,” said Knutsen, discussing Bodo’s progress in European football. “We have found our way and focused on performance and development.

“We have never talked about winning the league or getting to the Champions League but we have been incredibly good at working, developing, being innovative and paying attention to small details.

“I would say we have worked hard and worked well within our philosophy.”

Luiz Junior’s own-goal gave Tottenham an opening Champions League win at home to Villarreal but Spurs needed an added-time Joao Palhinha goal to earn a 1-1 home draw against the bottom side in the Premier League, Wolves, on Saturday.

Thomas Frank has made a promising start to his tenure, guiding his team to fourth in the table and four points behind leaders Liverpool, including seven points from his first three games on the road.

The Dane will now oversee his first Champions League away game as a manager and called on his side to show more of the “coolness” they had lacked after falling behind to a second-half Wolves goal.

“I liked the effort and mentality,” said Frank. “It’s huge, actually, to get a point when we were not perfect, especially during the second half.

“We didn’t hit our highest performance level but, when you’re down after the 90th minute, getting a point is a positive.”

Bodo v Tottenham team news

Defenders Brede Moe (groin) and Jostein Gundersen (unspecified), midfielders Daniel Bassi (groin) and Ulrik Saltnes (illness) and forward Ola Brynhildsen (knee) are doubts for the hosts.

“We have to remind ourselves how special this is,” said goalkeeper Nikita Haikin (via Glimt’s website), who spent parts of his youth career at Chelsea, Portsmouth and Reading and was briefly at Bristol City in between two spells with Bodo from 2019.

“Seven years ago, this was completely unthinkable. It’s special to bring the Champions League not only to Norway, but to northern Norway. We just have to enjoy it.

“It is now quite natural to see the all-yellows among football giants such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Tottenham. It is hard and focused work over time that has resulted in this.

“It’s cool to see how far we’ve come. It’s an incredible time and it just has to sink in. I’m very excited – that’s all I can say.”

Solanke’s prospects of troubling Bodo again are in doubt because of an ankle issue and defender Ben Davies may not feature as a consequence of a knee problem.

On-loan Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani’s involvement is also in jeopardy because of a leg injury.

New midfield signing Xavi Simons played for 78 minutes against Wolves but Frank suggested the Netherlands international was not as “sharp” as he might have liked.

Frank also said Tottenham “lost the structure” after Rodrigo Bentancur’s 62-minute replacement, with Brennan Johnson coming on.

Spurs had three attempts on target in the game and finished on an expected goals total of 0.88.

Bodo/Glimt v Tottenham prediction

Haikin says Bodo have learned from last season’s encounters and will carry a different “mindset” this time, so expect them to run Spurs closer without improving on their record of defeats in all five of their meetings with English teams.

Glimt are the highest scorers in the Eliteserien, beat Sturm Graz 5-0 at home in the Champions League qualifying play-offs and drew 2-2 at Slavia Prague on Matchday 1.

Tottenham conceded twice inside the first 31 minutes in their 2-2 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion in their last away game, making both teams to score look feasible and a 2-1 away win.
