Preview for Buffalo Bills @ New York Jets
The Buffalo Bills know they still have plenty to clean up as they face the New York Jets in Week 2 after producing a remarkable late comeback to defeat the Baltimore Ravens in their season opener.
A heavyweight clash between the Bills and the team they beat in last season’s AFC Divisional Round did not disappoint, as Buffalo recovered from a 40-25 deficit late in the fourth quarter to claim a stunning 41-40 victory thanks to Matt Prater’s field goal as time expired.
The Bills’ victory was a captivating illustration of what is possible for Buffalo with reigning MVP Josh Allen at quarterback. However, there was still plenty to concern head coach Sean McDermott, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Buffalo gave up 238 rushing yards as the Bills allowed Derrick Henry to run riot, problems at the safety position laid bare in a game that saw Henry go for 169 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while two-time MVP Lamar Jackson had 70 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Jackson threw for 209 yards and two scores.
And, going into a game against a Jets offense led by another dual-threat quarterback in Justin Fields and featuring a talented running back in Breece Hall, McDermott is clear improvements need to be made.
“It’s never just one area or one guy,” McDermott said on Wednesday of the defensive performance.
“Like I mentioned before, there was fundamentally some things, there was assignment-wise some things, there were some signs of youth for sure as well, all areas we can improve on and in and it’s all about growth this week for us.”
Correcting those mistakes will be key if the Bills are to slow down a Jets attack that thrived in defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Fields’ debut for the Jets was a spectacular one. Going against his former team, the 2021 first-round pick threw for 218 yards and a touchdown, adding 48 yards and a further two scores on the ground in a thrilling 34-32 loss. Hall had 107 yards rushing and a touchdown, with the Jets shredding a much-vaunted Steelers defense.
But, after seeing his team beaten by the quarterback they let go in Aaron Rodgers, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is demanding greater consistency from the Jets as they seek to defeat the Bills at home for a third time in four seasons.
“I tell this to the players quite a bit, that this is an imperfect game that we’re trying to perfect,” Glenn said.
“There’s always things we have to fix. And we always look for those little details, discipline that we have to try to improve on. We have to look forward and how do we consistently do that, what are the things we have to do as a team collectively to make sure. The offense didn’t do that just by themselves. There were a lot of things that happened in practice with our scout team that allowed that to happen.
“We want to be consistent. We don’t want to be a flash in the pan, 32 [points] one week and 10 the next week. And I know that happens because there are some good defenses out here. But for the most part we’re working to be consistent on all levels.”
Prediction for Buffalo Bills @ New York Jets
The Bills have had their struggles on the road at MetLife Stadium against their AFC East rivals, and it wouldn’t be a huge shock if there was something of a letdown after the high of their Week 1 comeback.
But it’s difficult not to trust Josh Allen at the moment, and the Bills should have enough to claim a narrow win.
Prediction: Bills 24-17 Jets
