PSG v Angers: Line-ups, stats and preview

PSG v Angers match preview

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique is expecting another tricky tactical test against Angers as the reigning champions seek to make it two wins from two in Ligue 1 this season following their 1-0 win at Nantes on Sunday.

The Canaries had 29% of possession and no efforts on target but only Vitinha’s 67th-minute goal separated the sides.

“We know how difficult it is to face teams like Angers, who defend well and look to counter-attack,” said Luis Enrique.

“Long-range shots are something we need to look for when facing a low block. We have different options against these teams and I’m happy to be able to play with that.

“We’ll need structure to attack in the best way possible and to press when we lose the ball. Every match is different, and so is every pressure situation.”

PSG are back at home for the first time in three months. “It’s very important for us to see our fans again and return to the Parc des Princes,” added Luis Enrique.

“We’ve really missed the stadium and the fans. We know the atmosphere always makes a difference, so now is the time to enjoy their support.”

Three of Angers’ 10 league wins last season came during their final six matches, lifting them three points clear of the relegation zone with a significant goal superiority.

Esteban Lepaul scored the only goal in the ninth minute as Les Noirs et Blancs starting with a home win over Paris FC on Sunday, surviving Louis Mouton’s 57th-minute dismissal.

“We are continuing from the end of last season’s work,” said right-back Lilian Raolisoa. “We saw that we could do something in Ligue 1.

“It’s satisfying for everyone to feel that we belong and show that we can play. We know that this is the best team in the world, so it’s a privilege to play against them.

“We’ll have fun… We know they’ll have a lot of the ball but we’ll be together and as soon as we get the opportunity, we’ll score.”

Raolisoa says Nantes’ performance encouraged Angers, who were only beaten by a 55th-minute Desire Doue goal when they visited PSG on April 5.

“We think of a scenario in our heads but also play to our strengths,” he added. “The system we had in the away match went rather well.

“It gave us hope to see that we could be strong against a big team like that. Even if we didn’t play our best football, we were solid. We take a little of all our experiences and go to compete on Friday.”

PSG v Angers team news

PSG centre-back Presnel Kimpembe could return from a virus but 19-year-old midfielder Senny Mayulu has a thigh injury.

No player eclipsed striker Ousmane Dembele’s total of 21 goals in Ligue 1 last season but the forward came off the bench against Nantes.

“This season will be a real challenge for Ousmane because he was incredible last year,” Luis Enrique said of the 28-year-old.

“I am convinced he can improve his performance. He has a real attacking and defensive quality. I always see him with a smile on his face.”

Mouton is suspended for Angers and fellow midfielder Haris Belkebla is a doubt with a knock the former Algeria international sustained against Paris.

Striker Lepaul has reportedly agreed terms with Rennes. “I want to keep him because he enhances all the work of the group,” manager Alexandre Dujeux said in his press conference on Thursday.

“He’s a fundamental and very important player for us. He is very good and constantly improving. Losing him would be very complicated.

“There is also the economic reality of clubs and football in general. But as a coach, it would be a hard blow.”

PSG v Angers prediction

PSG are huge favourites to win, making the odds for a single-goal margin of victory – either 1-0 or 2-1 – look tempting considering the Champions League holders are still building sharpness following their truncated pre-season because of the Club World Cup.

Angers have scored under two goals in six of their last seven games on the road but showed their can restrict PSG on their last visit to the Parc des Princes and beat Nantes 1-0 in their final away game of 2024/25.
