Szczesny signs two-year Barcelona extension

Barcelona have signed goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to a two-year contract extension.

Szczesny joined Barca in October last year, having announced his retirement from football just over a month earlier. The Pole’s signing came after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a ruptured patellar tendon.

The former Arsenal and Juventus keeper played 30 times for Barca in 2024-25, keeping 14 clean sheets as Barca won a LaLiga and Copa del Rey double while also reaching the semi-final of the Champions League.

Those exploits have earned Szczesny a contract until the end of the 2026-27 season, though he may have less of a role to play in 2025-26.

Barca signed Joan Garcia from Espanyol in June after activating his €25million release clause. The 24-year-old is likely to be the Blaugrana’s first choice in the coming campaign.

But the decision to extend Szczesny may spell the end of Ter Stegen’s time with Barca.

The Germany international is said to be reluctant to leave Barca, but the club are reportedly keen to move him on to save on his wages.

Inter Milan have been linked with a move for Ter Stegen, while Manchester United and Chelsea have also been credited with an interest in his services.
