After Cristiano Ronaldo had his contract terminated at the end of last year, Manchester United needed to fact fast in January to ensure they had some depth up front for the remainder of the campaign.
Clearly on a tight budget, Manchester United looked to the loan market and were able to bring in Wout Weghorst from now Championship outfit, Burnley.
With Anthony Martial once again injured, Weghorst has seen a lot of action since his winter switch.
He has featured 18 times for the Red Devils in all competitions so far and is expected to remain a regular in the XI for the remainder of the campaign.
However, the Dutchman has not scored too many goals. In fact, Weghorst has netted just twice in 18 outings for the Manchester outfit so far.
This has seen the 30-year-old come in for some heavy criticism from fans and pundits.
βThatβs a lot of matches and it shows the trust in me,β Weghorst said during this weekβs international break.
βIt also shows that I am doing a good job for the team. That was the thing I wanted when I came here β to contribute and try and help the club to be successful to win trophies. We have one now.
βWe have two more to go with the Europa League and FA Cup, and we want to get as high as possible in the table and definitely top four for the Champions League. So it just shows me that I am being part of it. And being part of us being successful and that appreciation, thatβs a good thing.β
Weghorst is expected to lead the line next Sunday when United face off with Newcastle.
