Why seriousness of Ben Chilwell’s injury could prevent Chelsea loanee’s recall

Why seriousness of Ben Chilwell’s injury could prevent Chelsea loanee’s recall

Ben Chilwell injury mars brilliant night

Chelsea swatted aside Juventus, who had previously been top of their Champions League group, by a scoreline of 4 goals to nil on Tuesday evening.

The Blues made a mockery of the billing of the game as a tough test, scoring three goals in the second-half to give the scoreline the comfortable image that the performance justified, even without their pair of first-choice strikers, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku, who both started the game on the bench.

Amid the euphoria of qualification, however, the evening was marred by a severe looking injury to left-back Ben Chilwell, who had to be substituted  on 71 minutes with a knee problem. Speculation has since raged that it may be an ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury.

Should this prove the case, it could see a change of transfer plans in January.

Saul at Left Wing-Back?

Amid all of Chelsea’s good performances of late, Saul Niguez has struggled. The Spaniard was brought in on loan in the dying embers of deadline day, but has flattered to deceive, and there were even rumours that the loan could be cut short with a January return to Atletico Madrid.

The injury to Chilwell could prevent this, however.

As pointed out by Football.London correspondent Adam Newson, Saul has experience of playing at left wing-back for Atleti, meaning that his value has further increased to Chelsea.

At present, only Marcos Alonso is a natural and fit left-back in the squad. And with Saul struggling in central midfield, could he be given a new lease of life in Chilwell’s absence?
