Granit Xhaka enjoyed a fantastic 2022/23 season with Arsenal. Mikel Arteta moved the Swiss international into a more advanced role in midfield, allowing him to impact the play a lot more in the final third.
Xhaka scored five and assisted seven in the league, playing a crucial role in Arsenal clinching 2nd place.
However, despite coming off arguably his best season in an Arsenal shirt, Xhaka looked to be heading toward the exit door this window.
Reports in late May and early June suggested Xhaka will leave the Emirates for German outfit Bayer Leverkusen this summer for just £13m, after the club offered him a five-year deal.
However, we have seen little news on the Xhaka front since those reports first emerged at the back end of the 2022/23 campaign.
Now, The Athletic have provided an update on the situation, though little has seemingly changed of late:
“Bayer Leverkusen’s pursuit of Granit Xhaka remains at the standstill it was at earlier this month, although the progression in Arsenal’s chase for Declan Rice could move things along. Even so, from Arsenal’s perspective, it is not a ‘need’ to sell Xhaka.”
