Newcastle to benefit? Arsenal table ‘strong bid’ for new goalkeeper

Arsenal target Revolution’s Turner

Arsenal could be set to add another goalkeeper to the first-team squad under Mikel Arteta after links with a move for MLS-based shot-stopper Matt Turner.

ESPN pundit and commentator Taylor Twellman tweeted the news earlier today that the Gunners have tabled a ‘strong bid’ for Turner (27), who plies his trade for New England Revolution and would be the first American to be on the books with the north London giants since former prodigy Gideon Zelalem.

The native of New Jersey has also won 13 caps for the United States national team and has been first-choice at Gillette Stadium for the last four seasons. Given his age and upbringing, though, he would surely only be back-up to standout keeper Aaron Ramsdale. He does boast similarities to the England shot-stopper, both with the ball at his feet and in his ability to command his box with authority.

Turner’s capture would make it far easier for boss Mikel Arteta to keep tactical continuity in the team when rotating in goal during certain cup competitions; something he was largely unable to do with Bernd Leno.

Newcastle to benefit in the hunt for reinforcements

News that Arsenal are interested in another goalkeeper comes in direct support of recent links that suggest Newcastle are on the tail of German international Bernd Leno, as they look to improve the overall quality at St. James’ Park before the window slams shut in less than two weeks’ time.

According to 90min, Newcastle have approached the Gunners with the view of securing Leno on an initial loan this month, with the obligation to buy in the summer as their funds are currently being directed towards other key targets before the conclusion of the window.

Leno was quickly usurped by Aaron Ramsdale after his move to the Emirates from Sheffield United this summer, and is now unquestionably second fiddle to the England keeper. He may therefore jump at the chance to walk into the Newcastle XI under Eddie Howe.
