Manchester United look to have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Lisandro Martinez.
Argentine Martinez is currently playing at Ajax, where he has long showcased both his technical prowess with the ball and ability in the tackle – skills required by most modern defenders.
Martinez is also left-footed and is more than capable of playing as a left-back if required.
This has made Martinez a very desirable target in the 2022 summer transfer window, with Manchester United, now headed up by ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, one of the main names linked with the South American.
Arsenal have also been linked with the stopper of late and did appear to be in the driver’s seat for the Argentine back in mid-June.
Now, however, Manchester United’s interest has ramped up and the Red Devils appear to have been handed a boost in their pursuit of the stopper.
Marcel van der Kraan, head of Dutch outlet De Telegraaf's sports section, believes that Martinez would welcome a move to Old Trafford and he has his hopes pinned on United.
Van der Kraan explained: "Martinez is very high on Erik ten Hag’s wishlist, so I expect big developments in the next 24 or 48 hours. Martinez will also have his hopes pinned on United, who are an absolute top club for him.
"Ajax will really cash out for Martinez and go to €45-50m, but that is the advantage if two clubs bid, as we saw with Lyon and Manchester United, then it suddenly goes higher."
This is a big blow for Arsenal as Martinez, who can play centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield, who have been a very useful player for them and solved several issues in their squad.
