Man United heat up interest in Kalvin Phillips

The hunt continues for Manchester United as they look for a long term solution in the holding midfield role at Old Trafford, and their wanting gaze has cast itself in the direction of Leeds United’s England international Kalvin Phillips.

According to SkySports’ transfer paper talk, the Leeds-native is now high on the priority list for the Red Devils, who have begun to search for alternatives to fellow England midfielder Declan Rice.

United had previously earmarked Rice as their principle transfer target for next summer earlier this month, but Ole Gunner Solskjær’s men may have to pass as the Hammers remain staunchly determined to receive a high fee for their academy product and have recently set a “reserve” figure of £90million if they are to part ways with their key central asset.

With Phillips always drawing attention from bigger clubs after his star has risen rapidly over the last two seasons, Leeds United have countered interest by slapping a £60million price-tag on local hero.

If that fee is to be received moving forward, it would constitute a club record fee for the Elland Road side, nearly doubling the money earned from Rio Ferdinand’s big move to United almost 20-years ago.

Midfielder fits the bill for what ails the Red Devils

There are no two-ways about it; Kalvin Phillips is unquestionably one of the main reasons why Leeds United are back in the Premier League.

Though Marcelo Bielsa’s men have not had the start to the 2021-22 campaign that many were hoping to see after the Whites finished in the top half of the table on their return to the top echelon of English football, Phillips remains arguably the most consistent performer under the Argentine.

His immediate impact in the national team set-up under Gareth Southgate while shining at Euro2020 is a testament to his quiet effectiveness. Additionally, his best qualities (ball-playing ability, astute reading of passages of play, and capable ball winning metrics) are precisely what United need as one of the missing pieces of the jigsaw puzzle.
