Chelsea are set to make a bid for Sporting and Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes, according to reports.

Nunes, 23, is currently plying his trade with Portuguese giants Portugal, who he joined in January of 2019.

Nunes began life at Sporting in their under-23 side, but was quickly promoted to the first team and is now one appearance shy of a century for his current employer.

However, the midfielder, who has already attracted attention from Wolves this summer, may not make it to said milestone as Portuguese outlet A Bola are claiming that Chelsea are set to make an offer for Nunes of exactly the same figures Wolves were preparing - €45m plus €5m in add-ons.

It is added that said offer could come as quickly as today (Wednesday) and that Nunes would see a move to Chelsea in a better light than Wolves, with Thomas Tuchel’s side able to offer him Champions League football and the chance to fight for the biggest trophies.

Should Chelsea sign Nunes?

Whilst Nunes is an impressive young talent, spending around €50m on a central midfielder may not be the best use of Chelsea’s money this summer.

The west Londoners will already have some fresh legs in midfield anyway, with Conor Gallagher back at the Bridge after a very successful loan spell with Crystal Palace.

And at present, Chelsea should probably focus their attention on other areas of their squad, such as centre-back and centre-forward.
