Barcelona unveil captaincy quartet ahead of the 2023-24 La Liga season

Xavi’s senior side was in need of churning over the leadership team in Catalunya after the summer departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

La Liga champions Barcelona have given the senior squad under Xavi Hernández a small facelift in the run-up to the 2023-24 season after naming a quartet of captains at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Xavi’s senior side was in need of churning over the leadership team in Catalunya after the summer departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Per the club’s official Twitter account, Barça unveiled their new leadership quartet, with Sergi Roberto, Marc-André ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong the four chosen.

Despite some questions from fans regarding the inclusion of Roberto in the mix, three key figures in the spine of Xavi’s team have all been included, while residual experience and leadership will no doubt be counted on from the likes of summer signings İlkay Gündoğan, Iñigo Martínez, and Oriol Romeu, as well as 2022-23 leading scorer Robert Lewandowski.
