Arsenal trigger 12-month contract extension for first-team star

Arsenal have extended a key player’s contract on deadline day.

According to Mark Mann-Bryans, Arsenal are expected to trigger Mohamed Elneny’s option to extend his contract by a further 12 months.

He add that conversations are under way over the deal and the midfielder’s injury has not had an impact on the decision, which could be announced in the next week or so.

Elneny has been on Arsenal’s books since 2016 when he signed from FC Basel.

The Egyptian has been a bit-part player for Arsenal for many years and has been loaned out during his time at the Emirates.

However, he remains a useful squad player for the north Londoners and impressed last season when Thomas Partey was out injured.

And with Albert Sambi Lokonga looking set to leave Arsenal on loan to Crystal Palace, keeping Elneny around for the time being is a big plus for Arsenal as they now have Granit Xhaka and Jorginho to cover one spot in midfield, whilst Partey and Elneny can cover the other.
