Ajax ready January swoop if Antonio Conte decides Tottenham attacker ‘not in his plans’

Ajax ready January swoop if Antonio Conte decides Tottenham attacker ‘not in his plans’

Word stemming from the English media on Monday suggests that the future of Tottenham Hotspur attacker Steven Bergwijn could well lie away from north London.

Lilywhites woes

Dutchman Bergwijn has of course endured an altogether underwhelming campaign to date.

Amid a combination of fitness woes and competition for places, the one-time PSV Eindhoven standout has been afforded just three Premier League starts.

The change on the bench at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month, meanwhile, has not paid dividends for Bergwijn, either, with Antonio Conte having made clear that all of Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane sit ahead of the winger in his attacking pecking order.

In turn, Bergwijn has managed only a pair of cameos off the bench over the course of the last month, amounting to a paltry 13 minutes.

Ajax switch?

It therefore shouldn’t come as all that much of a surprise to hear of the Dutch international being tipped for a January exit from north London.

Bergwijn, after all, remains highly regarded in many circles, with the 24-year-old possessing unquestionable talent.

And, if the latest word doing the rounds in the English media on Monday is anything to go by, then one such club who remain keen admirers of the wide-man are Ajax.

As per a report from The Times, the Eredivisie champions – of course fierce rivals with Bergwijn’s former employers, PSV – are expressing a keen interest in luring him back to the Netherlands.

Any such move would be expected to come in the form of a loan, with Antonio Conte set to have the final say regarding whether or not Bergwijn features in his plans for the 2nd half of the campaign.
