Achraf Hakimi’s agent has had ‘phone call from Chelsea’

Reports stemming from Italy suggest that Chelsea are showing an interest in Inter Milan’s Achraf Hakimi.

Hakimi impressing at right-wing-back

Hakimi spent two seasons on loan in Germany with Borussia Dortmund where he impressed in a back-five, forming a solid partnership with Jadon Sancho.

Despite an impressive 2019/20 with BVB which saw him score nine and assist 10, Real Madrid seemingly did not want to give Hakimi a chance to impress in their side once he returned from his loan.

Instead, Los Blancos shipped the Moroccan off to Inter Milan for a fee reported to be around £40m.

Inter, like Dortmund in 2019/20, largely operated with a back-five system throughout this past campaign.

This once again allowed Hakimi to excel in his favoured right-wing-back role.

All told, the 22-year-old would score seven and assist 10 in 37 league outings as Inter secured their first Serie A title in 10 years.

Chelsea eye Hakimi

Now, as mentioned above, recent reports have credited Chelsea with an interest in the defender.

As per football.london, citing FC Inter News, Inter Milan and PSG have reached an impasse over their negotiations for Hakimi.

Inter are said to want around €75m for the defender, whilst PSG have only offered €60m.

This has led to Chelsea being given an opportunity to make a move for Hakimi, with FL reporting that Hakimi’s agent has had a ‘phone call from Chelsea’ over a potential deal. It is, however, added that ‘official steps’ are yet to be taken.

Where does Hakimi fit at Chelsea?

Under Thomas Tuchel Chelsea have largely operated with a back-five.

This, as already discussed, is a formation in which Hakimi is able to thrive. And, with Cesar Azpilicueta now 31 and out of contract next summer, the African would no doubt make a decent replacement for the Spaniard.

Reece James can also play at RWB for Chelsea, but the end of 2020/21 saw him used as a right-sided centre-back in a three, meaning that both James and Hakimi could technically play in the same defense for the Blues.
