Tottenham headed into the game sat 5th in the Premier League with 30 points from 16.
Spurs were also on a patchy run of form, but were aware a win over Villa would have seen them temporarily climb back into the top-four above Manchester United.
And when all was said and done in north London, Aston Villa came away with the three points.
Tottenham began the tie on the front foot. Their first decent chance came 12 minutes in when Matt Doherty picked the ball up in the Villa box before nutmegging Tyrone Mings and shooting. But his shot was blocked.
However, both sides struggled to create too much as the first 45 wore on, with no shot on target in the match during the first 30 minutes.
Harry Kane came close to scoring late in the first half when Ivan Perisic crossed the ball to Kane whose header was goalbound if not for a clearance from Ashley Young.
Villa doubled their lead to kill the game off after 73 minutes. Spurs lost the ball high in their own half. John McGinn then played a superb pass to Luiz, who made a run into the box and slotted past Lloris.
