‘There was nothing wrong with the performance’: Van Dijk defends Liverpool’s display vs Real Madrid

Virgil van Dijk has defended Liverpool’s performance vs Real Madrid.

Liverpool and Real Madrid went head-to-head on Tuesday at Anfield, in the first of two Champions League last-16 ties.

Liverpool have a dismal record against Real Madrid in the Champions League, especially under Jurgen Klopp, who has lost two Champions League finals to Los Blancos whilst in charge of the Reds.

Despite this, Liverpool actually took a 2-0 lead early in the tie. A Darwin Nunez flick and a Mohamed Salah tap-in saw the home outfit 2-0 up after 14 minutes.

From there, though, things quickly went south for Klopp and co., with Real Madrid levelling things up before the break and then going on to score a further three goals in the second 45.

Now, speaking after the clash, Virgil van Dijk has suggested that there was nothing wrong with Liverpool’s performance on Tuesday:

“We are 5-2 down and have an almost impossible task to turn it around in Madrid,” he told CBS Sports after the match.
