The one stat that proves Nuno Espirito Santo is the wrong man for Tottenham job

Tottenham vs Chelsea

Tottenham fell to a rather embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace this past weekend.

Said loss came on the back on Spurs’ superb start to the season, which saw them pick up three wins in three from the Premier League.

As a result, the Lilywhites are no doubt desperate to get back to winning ways this weekend.

However, Tottenham do have a rather tough task ahead of them, facing off with London rivals, Chelsea, on Sunday.

The Blues have been one of the best sides in England since Thomas Tuchel took over and are likely to prove one of Spurs’ toughest opponents this term.

Why Nuno is the wrong fit for Tottenham

As a result, Spurs fans are unlikely to be too pleased with the recent stat that has emerged concerning their new boss ahead of the game.

Before taking over at Tottenham, Nuno Santo was of course managing Wolves for several years in the Premier League.

And, as revealed by BBC Sport, during his stint in the English top-flight:

Nuno Espirito Santo’s teams have failed to score in the first half in 83 of his 118 Premier League games in charge.

This will no doubt be an especially big concern for the Lilywhites for their clash with Chelsea.

The Blues are one of the most defensively sound sides in Europe since Thomas Tuchel took over and Tottenham cannot really wait until the second half of their tie on Sunday to step it up a gear and start causing them problems.

Furthermore, said stat highlights that Nuno is not exactly the most attack-minded manager, who instead prefers a pragmatic, defensive approach to many of his games – already shown at Spurs by their series of 1-0 wins early in the season.

This, though, is not what Tottenham want. Fans were sick of Jose Mourinho’s boring defensive displays last term. And, back in May, Daniel Levy said this was what he wanted from a manager:

“We are acutely aware of the need to select someone whose values reflect those of our great club and return to playing football with the style for which we are known – free-flowing, attacking and entertaining – whilst continuing to embrace our desire to see young players flourish from our Academy alongside experienced talent.”

And, as shown by the above stat from the BBC, Nuno is far from this.
