‘Shouldn’t be near the XI’ - England fans take aim at two players during USA clash

Gareth Southgate ponders England World Cup 2022 squad selection

Supporters of the England national team have taken to social media in their absolute numbers on Friday evening, to take aim at two members of Gareth Southgate’s squad.

The Three Lions, of course, are currently locked in action.

Flying high on the back of an opening day drubbing of Iran, Southgate and co. have pitted their talents against the USA, in a highly-anticipated World Cup Group B showdown.

England, for obvious reasons, headed into proceedings in possession of the title of favourites, with the United States having stuttered to a stalemate with Wales in their own tournament opener earlier in the week.

And yet, with 45 minutes on the clock at the Al Bayt Stadium, it is Gregg Berhalter’s underdogs who have enjoyed the better of things.

Both Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic have come close to opening the evening’s scoring, with the latter having seen his effort just beyond the half-hour mark come back off the crossbar.

Amid what has proven an altogether underwhelming display to date, it should therefore come as little surprise to hear of those of an England persuasion being up in arms online.

Taking to social media in numbers, the Three Lions faithful have not been shy in taking aim at a whole host of the country’s most high-profile stars.

None, though, have been more widely targeted than the pairing of Kieran Trippier and Mason Mount, as showcased below:
