Revealed: How many points Chelsea need to avoid their worst ever Premier League season

The Blues are not enjoying a good season and could make history come the end

Chelsea are in danger of having their worst ever Premier League season if they don’t improve under Frank Lampard in the weeks to come.

The Blues suffered a summer of massive upheaval when they were taken over by Todd Boehly, who promptly splashed the cash in a bid to make the side competitive again.

And to say it has gone badly is an understatement. Just weeks into the season, they parted ways with German boss Thomas Tuchel, with the manager and owner not on the same page across both signings and playstyle.

Following a dreadful spell under Graham Potter, the club have now lost all five of their games under caretaker boss Lampard, most recently falling to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge against Brentford.

They currently sit 12th, only above Bournemouth on goal difference and nine points above the relegation zone, while a European spot lies a mammoth and unattainable 15 points away.

The Blues are in danger of having their worst-ever Premier League season too. Marooned on 39 points, they need to pick up 12 points from their final six games of the season to ensure that this season doesn’t go down in history as their worst since the Premier League came into being in 1992.

Lampard takes his side across London to take on Premier League challengers Arsenal on Tuesday night, while they also face both Manchester sides and Newcastle United (therefore all of the top four) before the end of the season, with tough games against Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest also in the mix.

In all likelihood, then, this season will be historic for Chelsea, but not for the reasons Todd Boehly would have imagined.
