Relegated star ‘leaning towards’ Tottenham move despite Newcastle interest

The Lilywhites are in the driving seat to make their first signing of the summer

Leicester City star James Maddison is leaning towards a move to Tottenham Hotspur despite interest from Newcastle United, it has been reported.

The relegated star, who scored 10 times and grabbed nine assists last season, is almost certain to leave the King Power Stadium this summer with one year left on his contract in the Midlands.

Set for a return to the Premier League, he has been a long-term target of both Newcastle United and Tottenham, but it was felt that the Magpies had the advantage this summer with Eddie Howe’s side able to offer Champions League football, whereas Tottenham have no European football of any sort to offer the England international.

However, according to the Northern Echo, it is north London that has caught Maddison’s eye, with ‘a growing sense that Maddison is edging towards an alternative move to Tottenham’ rather than a switch to Tyneside this summer.

There are several reasons for this, they add, with Spurs ‘set to offer him a more lucrative weekly wage packet than the offer that would be on the table at St James’ Park’, while he would also like to remain in the south of England for family and personal reasons.

However, there are questions over whether Ange Postecoglu’s new side will stump up the required fee for Maddison, with Leicester looking for around £50m to part ways with the Englishman this summer.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will have to look elsewhere for midfield additions, with Howe desperate to add in central areas ahead of their first Champions League season in two decades.
