Rangers vs Celtic prediction: Rangers 1-2 Celtic

Hampden is ready for a huge and long awaited occasion.

For the first time since March 2011, Scotland’s big two meet in a cup final.

In each of the last three season, Celtic have hoovered up all of the domestic honours, completing the treble treble in May.

Thus, Rangers are currently enduring their longest trophy drought of their 147 year history.

Will the ribbons on the League Cup be blue or green and white?

One thing is for certain, this will be a game not to miss.

Rangers vs Celtic: Who will win?

It’s very hard to call.

Rangers are slight underdogs at 21/10 to win in 90 minutes.

Celtic meanwhile are 23/20 to claim victory in normal time.

A draw, which would force extra time, is 12/5.

Over 2.5 goals is 8/11.

Both teams to score is 4/7.

Rangers to win and both teams to score is 9/2.

Celtic to win and both teams to score is 11/4.

The Gers are 5/4 to lift the trophy; the Celts are 4/7 to continue their cup success.

Alfredo Morelos

Alfredo Morelos has a staggering 25 goals already this season. El Bufalo is 4/1 to open the scoring and 6/4 to score anytime.

Ryan Kent will also be a threat. He is 9/1 to score first and 10/3 to score at Hampden for the first time.

Odsonne Édouard has scored five in five in Old Firm fixtures. French Eddy is 4/1 to break the deadlock and 13/8 to keep up his impressive record.

Ryan Christie though is the Hoops’ top scorer. He scored the winner in last year’s League Cup Final and is 11/2 to score first and 11/5 to net once again.

Both Kent and Morelos to score is 11/1.

Both James Tavernier and Morelos to score is 16/1.

Both Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack to score is 55/1.

Both Christie and Édouard to score is 15/2.

Both James Forrest and Christie to score is 11/1.

Both Callum McGregor and James Forrest to score is 30/1.

Can Rangers bounce back from a rare slip-up?

On Wednesday night, they travelled to Pittodrie and were in cruise control early on.

Goals from Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack had them 2-0 up after just half an hour.

However, Aberdeen fought back and held on for a 2-2 draw.

That ended a five match winning run in the Premiership and was just the third time they’ve dropped points in the league so far.

They’re also going well in other competitions too.

On Thursday, they host Young Boys in the UEFA Europa League knowing that a point will take them through to the knockout stages.

A win and they will progress as group winners.

But first, they’re desperate hunt for major silverware continues.

In this competition, they’ve eased past East Fife, edged past Livingston and demolished Hearts.

That has seen them through to their first cup final since they lost the Scottish Cup Final to fellow championship side Hibernian in 2016.

Their last trophy came in this competition in 2010/11 when they beat Celtic 2-1 in the final.

To make matters worse, their most hatted of rivals have been winning every trophy since the Gers won promotion back to the top-flight.

Can Steven Gerrard win his first honour as Rangers manager and thereby end Celtic’s dominance?

Ten in a row?

As for the champions, how decisive could Wednesday night be in the title race?

With Rangers dropping points in the Granite City, they had the chance to go clear at the top of the table.

They were doing just that when Ryan Christie put them 1-0 up at home to Hamilton Accies early on.

However, against all the odds, the visitors equalised in the final minute of normal time.

This would be a major shock as Hamilton hadn’t taken points of Celtic at Parkhead since 2014.

However, just moment later, Scott Brown fired home a winner in the most dramatic of circumstances.

That makes it seven league wins in a row, 11 in all competitions, and means they are now two points above Rangers in the table.

Like their city rivals, they are currently top of the UEFA Europa League group but, their work is done.

They take on Cluj in Transylvania on Thursday but are already through as group winners.

Thus, their focus can 100% be on this final.

In the League Cup so far they needed extra time to see off Dunfermline Athletic but then hit five past both Partick Thistle and Hibernian.

The unprecedented treble treble was sealed in May but now they’re firmly eyeing up a tenth consecutive domestic honour.

Will Glasgow, and all of Scotland for that matter, remain green and white come Sunday?

Steven Gerrard

After an underwhelming performance and result on Wednesday, Steven Gerrard is likely to make changes to his XI.

As always though, Allan McGregor will be in goal.

He won 11 major honours during his first spell at Rangers so can he add to that here?

In defence, captain James Tavernier is a certainty to start at right-back.

Likewise, Connor Goldson and Filip Helander are the first-choice centre-backs; Nikola Katić will once again be on the bench.

At left-back, Jon Flanagan got a rare chance at Pittdorie but did not do enough to keep his place.

Borna Barišić will back come in, making his 22nd appearance of the season.

In midfield, Glen Kamara will come into the team as the more defensive midfield player.

He will sit in front of the back four alongside Ryan Jack who has already scored a career high five goals this campaign.

Further forward, big-money signing Ryan Kent will start; a lot will be expected of him.

The experienced duo of Scott Arfield and Steven Davis are also likely to be in the XI.

This would see Joe Aribo drop to the bench where he’ll find Sheyi Ojo and Greg Stewart.

Up top, Jermain Defoe may have scored 13 goals in 22 appearances this season but he will also be left in reserve.

That’s because Alfredo Morelos can’t stop scoring right now.

The Colombian international already has 25 goals to his name this season including a brace in the League Cup semi-final.

However, he is yet score in seven appearances against Celtic.

Can he break that duck and fire Rangers to cup glory?

As for Celtic, they have some injury doubts coming into this game.

Thus, it is hard to predict the XI that Neil Lennon will name.

There is no doubt that Fraser Forster will be in goal.

He won five major honours the last time he was at Celtic and, since returning, has conceded just 13 goals in 19 appearances.

In defence, Christopher Jullien was rested for the mid-week win.

However, he will rekindle his partnership with Kristoffer Ajer; Nir Bitton will drop out.

At full-back, Jeremie Frimpong has been outstanding on the right when he’s played.

With first choice Hatem Abd Elhamed injured, Lennon has to decide whether he gives the 18 year old a go or if he picks the more experienced Moritz Bauer.

Despite his inexperience, Frimpong’s form could see him start the biggest game of his young career so far.

On the other side, Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo is also expected to miss out through injury.

Jonny Hayes is also a doubt, Greg Taylor will keep his place.

Can these two deputy full-backs step-up?

In midfield, there are less fitness concerns.

As always, Callum McGregor and captain Scott Brown will sit in front of the defence.

Further forward, there are few certainties.

One is that James Forrest will start on the right.

Another is that top-scorer Ryan Christie will play, but where?

On Wednesday, he played wide-left with Olivier Ntcham more central.

This is likely to be the case again with Mohamed Elyounoussi coming back from injury.

The Norwegian is hoping to be fit enough for the bench.

Up front, Odsonne Édouard has missed the last three games with injury and that is a concern.

However, even if he is not 100%, French Eddy is likely to start.

Lewis Morgan, who has been filling in up-front, and Leigh Griffiths will be on the bench.

Will the domestic dominance continue?
