Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provides update on fitness of Edinson Cavani ahead of clash with West Ham

Manchester United’s mixed season opening

Domestically, Manchester United have begun the campaign well, winning three of their opening four fixtures of the 2021-2022 Premier League season, as well as grabbing a draw against Southampton.

The free-scoring side have already netted 11 goals, the joint-most in the division, and sit atop the Premier League table by virtue of this metric, ahead of fellow title challengers Chelsea. Having come second last time out, and lost the Europa League final, this already feels like a defining season for the club when it comes to silverware.

And that was before the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward, bought back for a second spell at Old Trafford, is a clear symbol that trophies must be won this season. And while they are on the right track domestically, a shock defeat away to Young Boys has made the job of qualifying from the Champions League group stage harder than it should have been.

With tricky fixtures against Atalanta and Villarreal, as well as the game against Young Boys at Old Trafford, on the horizon, United will need to be on top form to ensure qualification to the knockout rounds.

Solskjaer provides Cavani update

One man who has been conspicuously absent amid the Red Devils’ great start to the domestic campaign, however, is Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan forward is nursing an injury picked up in pre-season, and is yet to feature this season.

When asked about the chances of him playing this weekend, however, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pointed to next week’s Carabao Cup tie, also against West Ham, as a more realistic return date, explaining:

“Edinson hopefully will start training with us after the weekend”

“Hopefully, maybe Monday. Maybe he’ll be involved on Wednesday because he had a fantastic season last season.”

With Ronaldo returning to lead the line, and the likes of Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford also around, it remains to be seen just how much gametime Cavani will realistically be afforded. However, he remains a fantastic and experienced option from the bench.
