Newcastle United and Eddie Howe are reportedly plotting a move for Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney this summer as they look to strengthen their squad amid potential European football next season.
The Scot has been displaced from Mikel Arteta’s starting XI by summer signing Oleksandr Zinchenko, who captained the side for Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
So far this season, Tierney has started just four times in the top flight, appearing as a substitute a further 12 times, but has not really kicked on since arriving in north London from Celtic in 2019.
The 25-year-old is under contract until 2026, but could be on the move this summer amid rumours that he is not an ideal option for Arteta’s style of play, and the Mirror claim that the Scot would be keen on a move to Tyneside in a bid for first team football.
“Tierney who is anxious for regular first team football is believed to be open to a move to the North East”, they claim.
Meanwhile, Eddie Howe and high-flying Newcastle are keen to add the left-back to their ranks, with only Matt Targett as a recognised left-back in his current squad, and the Magpies in pole position to land European football after a fast start to the season.
Though they have slipped out of the top four in the Premier League, but sit six points above a Europa Conference League spot with 14 games left to play, while they are also looking to bring home their first major piece of silverware since 1955, when they lifted the FA Cup. They face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
