Newcastle identify Premier League star as Kieran Tierney alternative this summer

The Magpies are looking to strengthen ahead of the new season

Newcastle United have identified out of favour Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella as a potential option to add depth to their defence as they move away from a move for Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, according to reports.

The Magpies were thought to be hot on the trail of Tierney, who is widely thought to be available for the right price this summer having started just six times in the Premier League last season, and the Scot even lost his place to central defender Jakub Kiwior for the final two games of the campaign.

A fee of around £30m was rumoured to be enough to lure the 25-year-old away from north London and restart his career in the top flight, but no progress has been made on a move.

Now, reports from the Daily Mirror claim that the Magpies have turned their attentions away from Tierney, and have identified Chelsea’s Cucurella as an alternative to the Scot.

The Spaniard has endured a tough year since his £60m move to west London from Brighton, and despite starting 21 times in the Premier League, he missed the end of the campaign through injury.

Now, reports have suggested that Chelsea may already be willing to cut their losses on the Spaniard, who has another five years to run on his contract, and that should a substantial bid be made it would be considered.

Meanwhile, the Blues are pushing on with a move for Villarreal attacker Nicolas Jackson, and are still negotiating with Brighton over a potential move for yet another star in the form of Moises Caicedo.
