Manchester United targeting ‘next Frenkie de Jong’ after missing out on real deal

The Red Devils are looking to snap up the star for a much cheaper price

Manchester United are targetting a move for 16-year-old Sverre Nypan, dubbed the ‘next Frenkie de Jong’ after they missed out on De Jong last summer.

The Dutchman was linked with a move to the Premier League practically every day of the summer transfer window, with Barca having reportedly agreed a deal with Manchester United to sell the player, while Chelsea were also thought to be keen on exploring a deal.

However, De Jong’s departure forever depended on his own will, and the 25-year-old was desperate to remain in Catalonia, despite threats from the club that his current contract may be illegal, as well as plenty of fans taking to social media to tell him to leave amid Barcelona’s financial woes.

And, asked if a move would be forthcoming this summer, De Jong revealed that he would much rather remain at the Camp Nou as he managed to 12 months ago.

“No, I don’t think so. You never know of course. But I’m very happy in Barcelona!”, he told the media in March.

Now, reports claim that United are looking to pick up the next cab off the rank, rather than return for De Jong, as they eye up a move for Norwegian talent Nypan, who currently plays for Rosenborg in the top tier of Norwegian football.

Likened to De Jong both in playstyle and in his slight frame, he would certainly be more of a project option than De Jong, who is widely viewed as World Class.

However, should they be able to snag him cheaply this summer, Nypan could well save them significant money in th future.
