Manchester United have sent scouts to watch Porto’s Diogo Costa in action over the weekend as they look to plan for life after current no.1 David de Gea.
The 31-year-old Spaniard is one of the top earners at the club, having penned terms in 2019 that sees him paid over £350,000 per week, but is out of contract this summer as it stands, though there is a one-year option to extend his deal.
It was assumed that this would be taken up, but a spiralling wage bill has thrown that into doubt, while he has also been criticised for his on-the-ball ability, one of the key tenets of new boss Erik ten Hag’s footballing philosophy.
If they opted not to extend his deal, they would be letting their no.1 leave on a free transfer, following in the footsteps of the likes of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, both of whom did the same last summer. Dean Henderson could return from loan to fill the void, but recent comments have suggested he is not keen on a return to Manchester following his previous treatment.
And, as per Portuguese outlet A Bola, the Red Devils have sent scouts over to Portugal this weekend to watch Diogo Costa as his side emerged 4-1 victors against SC Braga, with central defender David Carmo also on the watchlist.

Costa would be an expensive addition, with Newcastle having seen an approach turned down over the summer before eventually opting for Nick Pope, and he is under contract until 2026.
