Manchester United faces a potential goalkeeping dilemma after André Onana announced Cameroon return

The 27-year-old, who arrived from Inter Milan this summer after helping the Serie A giants to an appearance in the Champions League finals, was previously retired from international duty in the wake of a fallout with Indomitable Lions boss Rigobert Song.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United is in the midst of a potential dilemma in goal after summer arrival and first-choice Red Devils shot-stopper André Onana has come out of retirement and returned to international duty with Cameroon.

The 27-year-old, who arrived from Inter Milan this summer after helping the Serie A giants to an appearance in the Champions League finals, was previously retired from international duty in the wake of a fallout with Indomitable Lions boss Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But now, the former AFC Ajax standout could miss up to eight matches in the post-Christmas period should Cameroon qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations during the current international break when they host Burundi on 12 September in Garoua’s Roumdé Adjia Stadium.

Per a statement from Onana posted on his social media, the United keeper opened up surrounding why he initially walked away from international service but also spoke about the need to unite on common ground for the national team.

“In the world of football, as well as in life, decisive moments occur, demanding crucial choices. In recent months, I have been confronted with trials marked by injustice and manipulation. Yet, my unwavering love and attachment to my homeland, Cameroon, remain intact.”

“My desire to represent my country has never weakened since my youth, and this aspiration remains an inseparable part of my identity. Nothing and no one can shake this conviction.”

“I respond to the call of my nation with unwavering certainty, aware that my return is not only to honour my dream but also to respond to the support of the Cameroonians, who deserve a national team determined to shine.”

“Time to unite, to work in harmony for our common good: Cameroon. I would like to salute the government, which is working hard to build a Cameroon better and for all.”

“My great thoughts are with the Cameroonian people to whom I say infinite thanks for their support and whom I look forward to seeing again.”

“Time, an infallible judgment of all things, will eventually enlighten us and reveal the accuracy of our actions.”

Onana has started life at Old Trafford in good stead despite already surrendering eight goals in just four appearances, and thankfully for the Red Devils, the club’s summer purchase of Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir will come in handy should Onana set off to AFCON in January, though Bayindir would be backed-up by only Tom Heaton.

As things stand, the club is now forced into a position where they must hope for the best, particularly on the injury front, if they are to avoid a possible catastrophe.
