Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne beats Lionel Messi, Manchester United star & more to award

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has recently won an individual award, beating out some top names to do so.

Kevin De Bruyne wins award

The award in question comes from the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, which was founded back in 1984.

And, in 2006, the IFFHS would introduce an award for The World Best Playmaker.

The award has been won most by Lionel Messi, who has picked up the award on a very impressive four occasions.

Former teammates of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, have also won the award on more than one occasion.

Now though, a new name has begun to dominate the award. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne picked up the award for the first time in 2020.

And the midfielder has now officially been named as the IFFHS’ The Best Playmaker in 2021 also.

Messi would as per IFFHS, finish second in the hunt for the award this time around, whilst Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller and Chelsea’s Jorginho took the remaining places in the top-five.

Did De Bruyne deserve to win the award?

But, though a superb player, did Kevin De Bruyne actually deserve to win the award this year?

2021 was not his best year for Man City or Belgian, though City did win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.

But, on the same note, Lionel Messi guided Argentina to the 2021 Copa America and notched the most assists at the tournament (5).
