As per a report from Italian outlet TMW (via CityWatch), Premier League champions Manchester City have set their sights on a surprise move for PSG star Marco Verratti.
Verratti, a 25-year-old deep-lying midfielder, has been on the books of PSG since 2012, when he made the move to the French capital from Pescara for just 12 million Euro.
And the Italian international, capped 25 times by the Azzurri, quickly went on to develop into one of world football’s most highly-regarded ‘registas’ at the Parc des Princes, with his calm on the ball, quick feet and eye for a pass having long seen Verratti likened to Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez.
In fact, so similar is the style of play of the diminutive midfielder to that of Xavi, that Barca actually targeted Verratti as the Spaniard’s long-term replacement at the Camp Nou last summer.
However, in the end, despite the Italian having handed in a transfer request in Paris, Verratti stayed put, reportedly committing his long-term future to PSG in the process.
The speculation surrounding his name has since led to what many consider a noticeable dip in form for the Pescara youth product, though, with Verratti’s performances last season having often not lived up to the sky-high standards that fans of the Ligue 1 champions have become accustomed to.
And, as per the aforementioned report from TuttoMercatoWeb this afternoon, one club who could look to take advantage of Verratti’s complicated situation at the Parc des Princes are Premier League champions Manchester City.
The Citizens missed out on the signing of Napoli midfielder Jorginho to Chelsea already this summer, though TMW suggest that Pep Guardiola has not yet given up on the possibility of signing a deep-lying creator before the English transfer window slams shut next week.
As such, a move for Verratti is being given ‘serious thought’, though it is noted that the gifted Azzurri star would need to hand in a transfer request for the second summer running for there to be any chance of a deal going through.
