Luis Rubiales finally announces plans to resign as president of Spanish Football Federation

Disgraced Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has, on Sunday evening, confirmed that he intends to imminently step down from his position.

The name of Rubiales has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines in Spain for several weeks now.

This comes after the former Levante man sparked widespread controversy for his actions on the back of the women’s World Cup final.

As the triumphant Spanish women made their way onto the podium ahead of receiving their winners’ medals, Rubiales held and kissed Jenni Hermoso, an act which the player herself later confirmed made her deeply uncomfortable.

Calls for Rubiales to immediately step down, in turn, quickly mounted.

The 46-year-old, already an unpopular figure amongst many circles, initially stood firm, though, adamant that he would not be forced out.

But, as alluded to above, on Sunday evening, as much has at long last been confirmed.

Speaking in an interview with Piers Morgan, Rubiales announced that he is ready to resign with immediate effect.

“Yes, I’m going to resign as President of RFEF, because I can’t continue my work.”

He continued:

“After the quick suspension carried out by FIFA, plus the rest of open proceedings against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position.”

“Insisting on waiting and holding on is not going to contribute to anything positive, neither to the federation nor to Spanish football.”
