Liverpool vs Brighton prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Brighton

Liverpool welcome Brighton to Anfield on Saturday for the ninth time in the history of English football. They have won six, drawn one and lost one of the previous eight encounters with Brighton here.

The Reds have won all four of the Premier League matches between the two sides, keeping a clean sheet in each of the last three. However, Brighton will hope under Graham Potter, they should provide a different challenge entirely.

Brighton’s recent away record won’t give their fans much hope coming to Anfield. They have lost each of their last three away matches in the Premier League. The Seagulls have also conceded at least two goals in each of those three defeats.

Liverpool have won each of the last seven matches against Brighton, in all competitions. Unsurprisingly, they are huge home favourites in this fixture with odds of 2/11 being available.

There have been four stalemates between these clubs in this fixture. The last of which came back in 1991 in the FA Cup fourth round. Odds of 6/1 are available if you feel Brighton can squeeze a point out of the Reds.

Brighton’s only win against Liverpool came at Anfield back in 1982. They are ten games without a win in this head-to-head, in all competitions, since then. Their 14/1 odds reflect their underdog status this weekend.

Liverpool vs Brighton: Who will score?

Mohamed Salah (pictured above) scored the opening goal in each of the last three matches against Brighton; each of which also proved to be the game’s winning goal. He has six goals so far this campaign and has scored in each of his last two league starts at Anfield. The Egyptian King is the 13/5 favourite to open the scoring once more, or you can back him at 8/15 to get on the scoresheet at any time.

Sadio Mané has been Liverpool’s star man in the league so far this campaign. He has eight league goals for the Reds and has scored in each of his last three league appearances. Mané scored the opening goal against Palace last weekend and is 10/3 to do so once again here. Or you can back the Senegalese international to score at any time, at 8/11.

Neal Maupay (pictured above) is Brighton’s top scorer this season, with four league goals. However, he is on his longest spell without a league goal since joining the club, now standing at three games. Maupay is 15/4 to get back to scoring ways at Anfield. Or you can back him at 14/1 to be the game’s opening scorer.

Liverpool vs Brighton: Match preview

A key decision for Graham Potter this weekend will be which formation he opts for.

Brighton have been very successful as of late with a 4-4-2 formation, with three wins in their last five matches using it. This includes their impressive 3-0 victory over Spurs.

However, they opted for a 3-4-3 for last weekend’s match against Leicester. Potter will also have watched Liverpool’s mid-week encounter with Napoli and how they struggled to break down their block in a similar shape.

After consecutive poor performances against Napoli and Crystal Palace, Liverpool will be relieved to have come through both matches without suffering defeat.

The suspension of Fabinho will mean the break-up of the Wijnaldum, Henderson & Fabinho midfield trident which many fans believe lacks the creativity to break the more defensive sides down. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain likely to return to the side, the hope is that he can provide that creative spark they will need to penetrate Brighton’s low block.

Many are tipping this match to be a mere formality for a Liverpool side undefeated at home in forty-four league matches. While Brighton are without a win on the road since their 0-3 win at Watford at the start of the season. Only Aston Villa have fewer points away from home this season than Potter’s Brighton.

Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Matip are still ruled out for Liverpool.

Fabinho will be suspended for this match after collecting a fifth yellow card this season, against Crystal Palace. Worryingly for the Reds, he hobbled off early in the clash against Napoli in midweek and may also face a spell on the side-lines.

Naby Keita is a doubt for the match. He withdrew from the squad to play Napoli with an illness. If it is the same bug Wijnaldum and Henderson had over the international break, he should only miss a few days at most.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was rested in mid-week. He was introduced late in the game to try and swing the game Liverpool’s way. He is expected to return to the starting XI here.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is likely to return to the starting XI. He was named on the bench on Wednesday and impressed in his short cameo.

José Izquierdo is the only player ruled out for Brighton, with a knee injury.

Aaron Connolly missed the game against Leicester with a groin problem which forced him off against Manchester United prior to the international break. Potter stated he is expecting him to return here though.

Bernardo is also back in training now but a weekend return for him is unlikely. He will be reintroduced over the busy Christmas period.

Lewis Dunk was missing for their 0-2 defeat by Leicester last weekend due to suspension. He will return to the starting XI here.
