England head coach Gareth Southgate, late on Saturday, provided an insight into his future in the nation’s dugout.
Southgate’s name has of course taken its place centre stage in the headlines across England once more late tonight.
This comes after his Three Lions side were sent packing from the World Cup in altogether gut-wrenching circumstances.
After being afforded a golden opportunity to draw level with France in a quarter-final showdown in Al Khor, talisman Harry Kane fluffed his lines from the penalty spot inside the closing ten minutes, en route to an eventual 2-1 defeat.
England’s half-century+ wait for an international trophy as a result, has rumbled on.
Long maligned by considerable sections of the nation’s supporter base, it should as a result come as little surprise to hear of fresh calls mounting on Saturday night for boss Gareth Southgate to be sent on his way.
During his post-match press conference, the possibility of as much was therefore put to Southgate himself.
The tactician, however, was keen to keep his cards close to his chest.
Refusing to rule out the possibility of moving on before the European Championships kick into gear in 2024, Southgate explained:
“I think after every tournament, we’ve sat and reviewed and that needs a little bit of time so everyone makes the right decisions.”
