England squad announced for games vs Italy & Ukraine: Southgate makes two surprise omissions in defence

Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for games vs Italy & Ukraine...

England face a crucial week of Euro 2024 qualifying as they take on Italy and Ukraine.

The Three Lions have been handed a tough group and will play both their toughest opponents in the first two matches.

Gareth Southgate’s side travel to Naples on March 23 to play Italy before hosting Ukraine at Wembley on March 26.

England squad: No White or Trent

Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope

Defenders: Ben Chilwell, Eric Dier, Marc Guehi, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, James Maddison, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice

Ben White and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the two most surprising absentees from the latest England squad.

Alexander-Arnold has had a challenging season and has often found himself out of favour with Southgate.

But no White is a surprise given his fantastic form in Arsenal’s bid to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

Fikayo Tomori also misses out and despite having only just returned from injury, he will be disappointed not to have been selected once again.

Ollie Watkins may also count himself unlucky not to have been selected having scored six goals in his last seven league appearances.

Raheem Sterling also misses out on a call-up following a slow start to his time back in west London.
