Man United closing in on new De Gea contract
Manchester United are reportedly ‘on the brink’ of tying goalkeeper David De Gea down to a new contract, with his current deal set to expire next summer.
De Gea has been a stalwart for Man United for the past eight years, since signing from Atletico Madrid.
Despite a bumpy start to his Old Trafford career, De Gea has cemented himself not only as Man United’s number one, but as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
He performed so well that he was heavily linked with Real Madrid for several years.
He even came close to joining Los Blancos in 2015, but a deal eventually fell through.
There’s been more talk of De Gea leaving recently, though, with his current contract set to expire next summer.
That means that De Gea would be free to negotiate a pre-agreement with any team from January, ahead of a free transfer in the off-season.
However, it now looks like he’s set to stay at Manchester United.
Deal ‘on the brink’, Oblak and Pickford considered
According to The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton, De Gea is ‘on the brink of his new deal’.
He claims that ‘it’s extremely close now’, which could mean an announcement is due soon.
David De Gea is on the brink of his new deal at #mufc – told it’s extremely close now – but some interesting details in this piece by @lauriewhitwell on how United monitored Pickford and Oblak as anxiety remained this summer. https://t.co/ytHURaa9GX

Crafton then links to colleague Laurie Whitwell’s recent piece on De Gea.
In that piece, it’s suggested that Man United were monitoring both Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Everton’s Jordan Pickford in case a deal with De Gea fell through.
Safe to say, the Red Devils will not be pursuing either of them now, with De Gea set for a new deal.
