David Luiz’s agent has, on Thursday, been discussing the Brazilian’s current contract with Arsenal.
Luiz costs Arsenal
The Premier League finally returned to our screens on Wednesday evening, with two clashes having taken place.
The latter of the fixtures saw Mikel Arteta return to the Etihad for the first time since taking the Arsenal job.
Unsurprisingly, it would be Manchester City who emerged victorious, thanks to strikes from Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden.
What was equally unsurprising, meanwhile, was David Luiz putting on yet another questionable defensive display.
The Brazilian deflected the ball into Sterling’s path for City’s opener, before bringing down Riyad Mahrez in the Arsenal box just minutes into the second-half.
The Arsenal stopper was shown a red card for his actions, with De Bruyne having stepped up to convert the penalty.
Luiz’s agent on defender’s contract
The Arsenal faithful will now likely dread the thought of Luiz returning from suspension to feature for the club again.
As things stand, though, Wednesday’s tie could well have been the stopper’s last in the colours of Arsenal.
Luiz’s current deal with the Gunners only runs until June 30th, and the defender is yet to agree new terms.
Speaking post-City, Luiz did claim that both he and Mikel Arteta want him to remain at the club.
However, as mentioned above, when Luiz’s agent discussed his client’s contract situation on Thursday, he remained rather coy.
Kia Joorabchian, speaking to talkSPORT, stated that Luiz’s contract uncertainty is not an excuse for his display vs Man City, before adding that the situation will be ‘resolved this week’:
“As I have repeatedly said all through the pandemic, at the moment the most important thing is to get football back – not to talk about contracts and futures, etc, etc.
“But of course now I think it becomes a moment when you have 14 days left and you are at a critical point in your career, where you have probably got three, four, five years left at the very top level.
“It works in the back of your mind, but that’s not an excuse for Wednesday’s performance. David also said I am not using this as any excuse for the performance.
“The situation from Arsenal’s point of view will be resolved this week. I think it’s just not Luiz’s situation.”
The Evening Standard, meanwhile, add that Joorabchian also suggested that both Luiz and Arsenal want to sort out a new contract.
However, when pressed on whether the defender will still be at Arsenal next month, Luiz’s agent remained rather coy, simply replying:
“We will find out before 23rd June.”
