Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly set for new Juventus contract

Ronaldo sub frustration

Cristiano Ronaldo was visibly frustrated during the 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final. The Portuguese forward had scored twice in the win and on the 76th minute was given his instructions to leave the field of play by coach Andrea Pirlo.

He was visibly frustrated with the decision and was even seen remonstrating with Pirlo on the touchline after he had been brought off.

However, after the match, the former Juventus, Inter and AC Milan midfielder reiterated that there is no clause in the Portuguese icon’s contract which prevents him from being substituted. Pirlo explains that the decision was to protect and rest him ahead of some important fixtures.

“There is no contract clause that says he can’t be subbed off. He knows he is a fundamental player for us but to get his breath back, he must always be at the top,” he said.

New Ronaldo contract

However, despite this seemingly minor discrepancy between coach and player, Ronaldo is reportedly set to sign a contract extension until 2023 according to Italian media.

Ronaldo will turn 36 years of age tomorrow, however he has not looked like slowing down whatsoever and remains one of Serie A’s top goalscorers. His current deal runs out at the end of the 2021/22 season.

He is currently under investigation for possibly breaching Covid regulations and Pirlo recently distanced himself from his talisman’s alleged behaviour.

“Ronaldo had the day off, he may do as he pleases in his free time. Off the pitch, we are free citizens with each one having their own personal responsibility,” Pirlo said.
