Confirmed: Aston Villa sign Matt Targett from Southampton & the impact on Che Adams

Aston Villa sign Matt Targett from Southampton

Aston Villa have completed the signing of left-back Matt Targett from Southampton on Monday.

Southampton reported the following on their website:

Southampton Football Club can confirm that Matt Targett has agreed a permanent transfer to Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee.

How much did Aston Villa pay for Matt Targett?

According to BBC Solent, Matt Targett joined Aston Villa in a deal which could end up costing 14 million pounds.

Targett, 23, was under contract at St Mary’s until 2022.

Last season, the defender scored once and chipped in with three assists in 16 Premier League appearances.

Targett made 21 appearances for the Saints in all competitions in 2018-19.

Possible impact on Birmingham’s Che Adams

Targett’s move to Aston Villa was predicted in last weekend’s Sunday Times.

In that report, the broadsheet also revealed that should Southampton sell Targett, the Saints would reinvest those funds quickly:

Southampton will look to reinvest the fee by closing a £15m deal for Bimingham striker Che Adams.

Southampton only scored 45 goals in 38 Premier League matches last year. Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse both scored seven goals in the league.

As for Che Adams, the 22-year-old attacker scored 22 goals in the Championship for Birmingham in 2018-19.

Update: Since posting this article, Southampton have confirmed that Che Adams has signed on.
