Chelsea linked with Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho as Eden Hazard replacement

Eden Hazard & Chelsea

Sunday could well be Eden Hazard’s final Premier League match for Chelsea.

The Blues close out a successful league season with an away trip to Leicester.

Maurizio Sarri’s men were, at one point, discussed as possible title winners in 2018-19. However, while there have been plenty of dips since, Chelsea have wrapped up a top-four spot with a game to go.

Chelsea will hope to beat Leicester to ensure a third place finish and avoid Champions League qualifiers.

As for Hazard, rumours have been rife for months that he will leave Stamford Bridge to join Real Madrid.

Chelsea linked with Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho

Over the weekend, Spanish radio station Cadena Ser linked Chelsea with a summer move for Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho has been regularly targeted by Barcelona’s fans since joining from Liverpool.

The Brazilian playmaker has failed to live up to his billing, and, considering his hefty price-tag, that’s left him in the firing line.

Cadena Ser believe that Barcelona could cash in on Coutinho by selling him to Chelsea.

The outlet reports that Chelsea have already assigned an “intermediary” to hold talks with Barcelona.

Moreover, it’s claimed that Roman Abramovich is keen on signing Coutinho “to lead his next project” after Hazard’s exit.

Cadena Ser does, though, acknowledge the elephant in the room; Chelsea are currently banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows.

However, the Spanish station note that Chelsea could suspend that transfer embargo this summer as they appeal their ban to the Court of Arbitration.

So how likely is the Coutinho to Chelsea deal?

While Cadena Ser seem confident the deal could happen, it feels remote at the moment.

Firstly, there’s the huge question of whether an appeal to the CAS will, in fact, suspend their transfer ban.

In addition, while not exact like-for-like players, Chelsea have already splurged significant money on signing Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund.
