Alvarez earns point for Atletico

Julian Alvarez scored his first goal of the season for 10-man Atletico Madrid as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Stuttgart in the Champions League.

Stuttgart looked on course for three wins from three to start the league phase when Jamie Leweling drilled home a low effort to break the deadlock in the 36th minute.

However, Alvarez, who failed in his bid to force through a move to Barcelona in the summer, responded two minutes into the second half, finding the top-right corner with a first-time finish from Ademola Lookman’s pass.

Atletico were reduced to 10 in the 64th minute when Morten Hjulmand saw red for an awful challenge on Angelo Stiller. However, Stuttgart could not make their extra man count.

Their Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund bounced back from defeat to Bodo/Glimt last time out as a Serhou Guirassy double gave them a 2-1 win over Sabah in Azerbaijan.

Bodo, meanwhile, made Napoli work extremely hard for their first win of the league phase.

Matteo Politano opened the scoring in Naples after just 53 seconds, only for Bodo to restore parity when Jens Petter Hauge slotted into the bottom-right corner.

Scott McTominay put Napoli in front again in the 41st minute, only for Andreas Helmersen to equalise as Bodo responded once again.

Yet McTominay doubled his tally with a close-range header to give Napoli the lead for a third time, and an own goal from Odin Bjortuft made the points safe for the hosts before Sondre Brunstad Fet pulled one back in stoppage time.

Roma joined Napoli in claiming a first victory of the league phase, thumping Slovan Bratislava 4-0, but it is three defeats from three for Portuguese champions Porto after Guus Til’s effort gave PSV Eindhoven victory at Estadio do Dragao.

Elsewhere, Slavia Prague earned their first point of the phase as Pavel Kacor’s injury-time goal earned them a 2-2 draw at Fenerbahce.
