Arsenal’s Albert Sambi Lokonga outlines what made him sad about his Emirates debut

Arsenal sign Lokonga

Arsenal completed their second signing of the summer window on July 19th.

The Gunners had already secured the services of Nuno Tavares from Benfica, with the 21-year-old expected to provide back-up to starting left-back, Kieran Tierney.

And Tavares was joined in north London by former Anderlecht midfielder, Albert Sambi Lokonga.

On the back of his signing, Lokonga was handed his debut for the Gunners in a pre-season friendly in which Arsenal beat Championship outfit Millwall 4-1.

Lokonga speaks on Emirates debut

Then, this past weekend, Lokonga was handed his first outing at Arsenal’s home ground, the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners took on Chelsea in a pre-season clash on Sunday, and while both teams still had a few players missing, but there was still plenty of quality on display across the 90 minutes.

But in the end, despite Joe Willock appearing to score a late equaliser only for the officials to not to give it, Arsenal were beaten 2-1 thanks to strikes from Kai Havertz and Tammy Abraham cancelling out Granit Xhaka’s 69th-minute effort.

Lokonga was a second-half sub and came on for the final 20 minutes. Following the game, the Belgian would discuss his Emirates debut, stating that it was a bit sad due to Arsenal not getting the three points. (Obviously, you cannot get points in a friendly but he clearly meant that his side did not win).

‘It was really good, a little bit sad because we didn’t get the three points.

‘But yeah, my first time at the Emirates, I think it’s a good thing for me, a good start. So I hope the future will be better.

‘If I have to speak about the team, we had a really good performance but we gave away the ball and then they scored.

‘But yeah for the next time we have to be careful because I think this kind of goal we can avoid.’
