Arsenal need some fresh legs up front this summer if they are to compete with Manchester City and in the Champions League.

Gabriel Jesus remains a quality player but he lacks the killer instinct of a no.9 in front of goal.

A number of players, including Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus and Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa have been touted for an Emirates switch, but Paul Merson believes Romelu Lukaku could also be a good shout.

Merson told Give Me Sport that a thin pool of players is available to Arsenal this summer, saying: “Ivan Toney would have suited Arsenal, but that won’t happen now because of his ban.

“Romelu Lukaku might be available. The 30-year-old is an out-and-out centre-forward. He will stay up front and back into players. That might help Arsenal.

“They can’t be predictable. Every goal they score is a ‘good’ goal. They need to be able to score scrappy goals.

“They looked at Dominic Calvert-Lewin before. Would that be right for them after the season he’s had? Probably not.”

Lukaku spent 2022/23 on loan with Inter Milan but is due to return to Chelsea this summer.

The Belgian did not have a great season with the Blues last time out, netting just eight Premier League goals.

But he has proven in the past for Everton and Manchester United that he can do it in the Premier League.
