Aaron Ramsdale has been Arsenalβs main goalkeeper for nearly two seasons now, taking over Bernd Leno at the beginning of 2021/22 following some poor displays for the Gunners.
During that time, Ramsdale has made some quality saves, recently against Liverpool in the dying minutes to salvage a draw for Arsenal.
However, Ramsdale has come in for criticism over the weekend after his error led to Southampton taking an early lead vs Arsenal on Friday evening in a game they went on to draw 3-3.
Despite the error, though, Wayne Rooney has since been full of praise for Ramsdale and even compared him to legendary Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel:
βIβm a big fan of Aaron Ramsdale,β Rooney wrote in The Times. βDespite his slip-up against Southampton, he has made a number of fantastic saves and played with huge presence.
βNormally, with goalkeepers, you want them to have character and presence but you want them to have calmness as well.
βWell, he does and he reminds me of Peter Schmeichel. Obviously, Ramsdale has to keep improving to get near Schmeichelβs levels but the whole package makes him the closest thing Iβve seen for a long time to the Great Dane.β
Ramsdaleβs next outing comes vs Manchester City on Wednesday, and he will need to be at his best to keep Erling Haaland at bay.
