Two-time women’s World Cup winner Alex Morgan has announced her retirement from professional football.
The 35-year-old confirmed the decision on social media on Thursday, also confirming she has a second child on the way.
Morgan built a reputation as one of the most famous female footballers during her career and will wave goodbye to the sport on Sunday when San Diego take on North Carolina Courage.
In 2022, she stole the spotlight in a campaign to win equal pay in the USA alongside her international team-mates.
Speaking on her retirement, she said: “It has been a long time coming and this decision [to retire] wasn’t easy,” she said.
“But at the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this would be the last season that I would play soccer.

“Soccer has been a part of me for 30 years and was one of the first things that I ever loved.
“I gave everything to this sport and what I got in return was more than I could ever have dreamed of.”
Having spent a season with Tottenham in 2020, she decided to return home to finish her career.
During her time, she won the 2015 and 2019 World cup, as well as Olympic gold with the US at London 2012 and Tokyo 2020.
