5 players Chelsea should sell to fund striker transfer

Chelsea are in desperate need of a new centre-forward heading into the summer.

Chelsea’s main problem this season has been their lack of goals.

The Blues have conceded 23 times in 23 Premier League matches in 2022/23 – a record only bettered by Newcastle United.

However, Chelsea have also scored just 23 goals in the league this term, which is the worst record in the top 11 and the reason they are sat 10th in the PL at the time of writing.

So, it seems obvious that Todd Boehly and co. will look to sign a no.9 in the summer.

But after spending over £600m in just over six months, Chelsea need to be wary of FFP.

And as Chelsea already have a very inflated squad, it would make sense to sell off some of their players to fund a striker move.

5 players Chelsea should sell this summer

When Mendy first joined the Blues in 2020 he was a major asset. The 30-year-old replaced the under-performing Kepa with ease and played a key role in Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League triumph.

However, Graham Potter has since taken the reins and Mendy’s inability to play out from the back combined with Kepa’s resurgence has left Mendy very much on the fringes at Stamford Bridge.

Trevoh Chalobah (£22m market value)

Chalobah has always been a useful squad player for Chelsea and has put on some good displays during his time in west London. However, the likes of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile are ahead of the Englishman in the Chelsea pecking order. And with Potter playing a four-back on a more regular basis, there is little room for the 22-year-old Chalobah.

Conor Gallagher (£30m market value)

After his impressive loan spell with Crystal Palace in 2021/22, big things were expected of Gallagher when he returned to Chelsea. But the 23-year-old has had a tough time finding his feet under two managers at the Bridge so far. Gallagher struggles in a two-man midfield when Chelsea play a back-five, he does not look comfortable in the pivot when Chelsea player 4-2-3-1 and the Blues now have better options at CAM when deploying the 4-2-3-1.

Mason Mount (£65m market value)

Mason Mount continues to divide both Chelsea and England fans over his ability. But the fact remains that Mount will have just one year left on his current contract come the summer and Chelsea are unwilling to match his new demands. And with Chelsea now having a plethora of attacking midfield options and Christopher Nkunku also set to arrive in the summer, the smart move would be to cash in on Mount before losing him for free.

Hakim Ziyech (£18m market value)

Hakim Ziyech never really found his feet in England. He has scored zero and assisted one in 18 so far this season. The Moroccan was also set to join PSG in January before the deal collapsed at the last minute. As a result, it seems very likely Ziyech will be moved on this summer.
