Jordan Henderson scored twice as Chelsea returned to winning ways in style with a 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth.

The Blues had three weeks to stew on their 3-0 defeat to Brentford before the international break, and made a lightning fast start with two goals in 149 seconds.

Veteran midfielder Henderson broke the deadlock 66 seconds in, before Morgan Rogers scored the 50th goal of his club career with just under two-and-a-half minutes on the clock.

Bournemouth stemmed the tide until half-time, but Chelsea were lightning quick off the mark to start the second half as Joao Pedro made it 3-0, only for Evanilson to give Bournemouth a glimmer of hope.

Yet the game was put beyond doubt by Pedro’s second, before a fine free-kick from Henderson rounded off the rout.

Henderson opened his account for Chelsea as Cole Palmer marked the signing of a new contract with a superb assist as he drove into the box before turning to lay off for Henderson to beat Djordje Petrovic with a whipped finish.

And just over a minute later it was 2-0 as, after a Pedro Neto shot was parried by Petrovic, Rogers saw a curling effort deflected home by Antonio Silva.

That goal marked the earliest Chelsea have held a 2-0 lead in the Premier League, but Bournemouth did eventually settle and only a brilliant double save from Emiliano Martinez prevented the Cherries from finding a way back into the game, the Argentinian denying Rayan and Ryan Christie in quick succession.

The visitors were made to pay for not taking those chances as Pedro gave them a mountain to climb, rifling into the roof of the net from Pedro Neto’s pull back in the opening minute of the second half after poor defending from Silva.

Marco Rose’s winless side were given a lifeline when Chelsea failed to clear a corner and Moises Caicedo’s clearance cannoned in off the fortunate Evanilson.

But just as Bournemouth looked to be growing in belief, any hope of a comeback as extinguished as Pep Chavarria got in behind the visitors’ high defensive line and picked out Pedro in the six-yard box, giving the Brazilian a simple finish.

Henderson had the final say in wonderful fashion, bending home a free-kick from 30 yards to cap a wonderful afternoon for Chelsea, who moved up into fifth in the Premier League, leaving Bournemouth with just three points from six games.
