Preview for Everton v Coventry
Frank Lampard returns to Everton for the first time since his sacking in January 2023 on Friday night, as his Coventry City side visit the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Standing in his way is a David Moyes team that has started to find its feet.
Everton have won back-to-back games against Newcastle in the space of a week. They beat the Tynesiders 3-1 in the EFL Cup, and then won 1-0 at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Monday night.
Despite all the good things being done by the Toffees, the build-up has been dominated by the ongoing saga surrounding Jack Grealish. The on-loan Manchester City forward was left out of both Newcastle games because of a disciplinary issue, with reports suggesting he missed a training session. The England international won’t be considered for this clash although Moyes did say: “Jack is not available. I would not give you the plan but we will be working with Jack again soon.”
Grealish’s absence has been offset, however, by the improved form of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The former Leicester and Chelsea midfielder has been tipped to receive an England call-up on Friday and Moyes understands why his name is in the conversation.
“As I have said many times, thank goodness I don’t have to pick the England team because England have so many good players to choose from,” said the Scot, who will equal Harry Catterick’s record of most games managing Everton on Friday night with 592. “Kiernan is getting back to the levels of last year. In the last couple of games he has been very good.
“I hope he does [get called up]. He must certainly be knocking on the door. The position he plays in, there are so many good players. As long as he keeps doing well for Everton, we will be pleased, but if he gets recognised for England then that will be great.”
Coventry are back in the Premier League this season after a 25-year absence, and Lampard’s side have had a mixed start. They are 16th with three wins and six defeats from their first nine games, but they have won three of their last five, including a 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Saturday. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni scored, before Enzo Le Fée’s late penalty.
Their away form is the big concern with the Sky Blues mustering just three points on the road.
Goals have been hard to come by for both sides. Everton and Coventry have each scored nine Premier League goals in nine games with only Nottingham Forest (six) and Sunderland (seven) scoring fewer.
The sides haven’t met in the league for a quarter of a century. The last meeting came in 2001, when Everton won 3-1 at Highfield Road.

Team News for Everton v Coventry
Everton have a fully fit squad with only Grealish absent. Jarrad Branthwaite returned to the starting line-up against Newcastle after missing two games because of concussion protocols. He was forced off in the 82nd minute, but Moyes confirmed it was only cramp.
Lampard will leave it late to decide whether to include Bobby Thomas and Frank Onyeka.
Thomas missed the Sunderland game with a calf injury, while Onyeka was also absent due to a groin strain.

Prediction for Everton v Coventry
Coventry are on a nice run but should struggle to cope with Everton’s physicality. Expect another big game from the in-form Dewsbury-Hall.
