All four Serie A matches scheduled for Monday have been postponed after the death of Pope Francis, Italian football authorities have confirmed.
The Vatican announced on Monday morning that Pope Francis had passed away at the age of 88.
His death followed a five-week hospitalisation period during which he was being treated for an infection. He had recently been released before his health suddenly deteriorated.
The matches originally planned for Easter Monday – Torino vs Udinese, Cagliari vs Fiorentina, Genoa vs Lazio, and Parma vs Juventus – will now be rescheduled, with new dates to be announced by the league in due course.
Easter Monday is a public holiday in Italy, and the fixtures were part of the extended holiday weekend calendar.
Pope Francis, who became the head of the Catholic Church in 2013 after succeeding Pope Benedict XVI, was widely respected for his compassion, humility, and leadership.
Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today's league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed. The date of the rearranged fixtures will be announced in due course.

His faith, his humility, his courage and his dedication have touched the hearts of millions of people, making him a moral reference of our time.”
The Italian football community have already initiated plans to honour the Popeβs legacy in upcoming fixtures and commemorations for their Catholic leader.
