Rangers have confirmed that they are officially engaged in discussions with American investors – including representatives from the San Francisco 49ers – regarding a potential ownership change.

Although speculation surrounding interest has circulated for months, the Ibrox club has now stated that β€œproductive conversations” are currently taking place.

A joint statement said that the group of investors is pursuing a controlling stake in the Scottish club.

While no timeline has been provided for when a deal might be finalised, reports have suggested that an agreement could be wrapped up between April and June.

β€œRangers and its existing controlling shareholders are in productive conversations with the two lead members of the Consortium, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group, about the potential for the Consortium to acquire control of the club and to inject additional capital.

These discussions reflect a shared recognition of the importance of Rangers FC’s long-term direction, ambitions and management.”

Rangers also announced a new addition to their leadership team. Kevin Thelwell, currently serving as Everton’s director of football, has been appointed the new sporting director at Rangers.

Thelwell has already confirmed he will be departing the Merseyside club this summer.

On the pitch, Rangers have faced challenges this season. Their Europa League campaign came to a close earlier this month after a 2-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao.

With just five league matches left in the season, city rivals Celtic are on the verge of clinching their 55th league title – and possibly another domestic treble.

Financial pressure has mounted for Rangers, who reported a net loss of Β£17.2 million in October 2024, despite claiming record-breaking revenue and earnings for the previous year ending in June.

Behind the scenes, quiet discussions about a possible sale of the club have been ongoing since the latter half of 2023.
